Are candlestick patterns like doji and engulfing reliable on their own?

Lucas Meyer Asked 19 days ago 2.2K views

Some videos say a single engulfing candle is enough to enter a trade. Is that realistic?

Not on their own. A pattern is only useful in context. Ask where it formed:

  • Is it at a clear support or resistance zone?
  • Does it agree with the larger trend?
  • Did the next candle confirm it?

An engulfing candle in the middle of a range means very little. The same candle at a strong level after a pullback in a trend is more interesting.

Also test it: go back through past charts and count how often it worked. Many popular patterns have a weaker record than the books suggest.
