I have some savings and I want to start investing in stocks. Should I pick companies or buy an index fund?

For most beginners an index fund or ETF is a sensible start. It spreads your money over many companies, costs little and needs no stock picking skill. Picking individual stocks can pay off, but it takes research and most people do not beat the index over long periods.

A common approach is to put the bulk in a broad index fund and, if you enjoy it, use a small part for individual stocks. Compare the fund's cost (expense ratio) and tracking error, and think about your time horizon.
