People use both words. Are they the same thing, and which one is better for a beginner?

Investing means buying a share to hold for years, based on the business and its growth, and accepting the ups and downs along the way. Trading means holding for a shorter time, from minutes to weeks, and trying to profit from price moves.

Trading needs more time, more skill and more attention to costs and taxes, and most active traders do worse than simple long-term investing. Many people do both: a core long-term portfolio plus a small trading account with money they can afford to lose.
