Gold seems to jump at random. Which factors should I follow?

Gold has no single driver. The most watched ones are:

  • Real interest rates and the expected path of central bank rates. Gold pays no interest, so it often struggles when real yields rise.
  • The US dollar. A stronger dollar often weighs on gold, though the link is not constant.
  • Inflation expectations and demand for a safe haven during uncertainty or geopolitical stress.
  • Central bank buying and physical demand.

These relationships change over time, so treat them as context, not as a rule.

I would add the Fed calendar. Gold often moves sharply around FOMC meetings, speeches and US inflation data, so know when they are due.
